Day 13 -Skagafjordur, Iceland - July 6

Follow our journey on this map.

Day 13 was a surprise. I know you noticed it.... We're wearing sunglasses! It was a spectacularly bright crisp day for us to tour the highlands.

We left the ship and drove to the Skagafjörður Heritage Museum in Glaumbær. Glaumbær is a traditional Icelandic turf farm from the 18th and 19th centuries that was restored and declared a conservation site in 1947. It was fascinating. There were outbuildings as well as a home that had full turf walls, limited interior framing and sod roofs. The view from the homestead was unbelievable. Had it been a rainy, cloudy day the experience would not have been the same.

From there we headed the Church of Vidimyri, one of the few preserved turf churches of Iceland. Built in 1834, it was renovated and preserved by the National Museum of Iceland in 1936.

Next was an interesting historical museum built around the where the clans of Ásbirningar and Sturlungar fought in 1246 during one of the biggest battles in Icelandic history. If you ever watched Last Kingdom you would feel right at home😊

Heading back to the ship we stopped and saw an absolutely huge walrus (estimated to be about 800kg) lounging on a dock.

Dinner was not disappointing: amuse-bouche (of course), tuna tartare with avocado, chicken with cream cheese and fennel, followed by a Napoleon. Just one dessert this time!

As we were wrapping up the day, the Captain pointed out that we were inside the Arctic Circle and that the sun would not be setting at all. It's really odd to have it light out the whole time. We've heard from folks here that in the winter, they only get 3-4 hours a day of light. I guess it all balances out!
