Day 12 - Akureyri, Iceland, July 5

Follow our journey on this map.

Day 12 was another rainy, cold, windy fabulous day. We headed out to the Godafoss Waterfall. It’s called the most spectacular waterfall in Iceland and it’s certainly the best we’ve seen. It flows over a 100’ wide horseshoe-shaped rock that rises in the center to separate the flow into two streams. One is about 30’ high while the other is about 55’ high.

The big surprise was that it stopped raining when we got there and while the wind persisted, the visibility was great!

After that we went to a botanic garden with a huge, well-curated collection of plants that grow in these extreme locations. It was quite nice.

Heading back to the port I grabbed a rough shot of 3 ships that were in port. Ours, the blue and white vessel on the right (about 500 passengers), one to the left (250 passengers) and Jewel of the Seas (2,500 passengers).

Dinner was another great event (amuse-bouche steak Diane, dessert), with the server insisting that we have the “special” dessert. We declined but he brought it anyway. It was a raspberry compote in the center of a rich chocolate mousse accompanied by a dollop of vanilla gelato. That’s why we go to the onboard gym!

Oh, I did catch proof that the sun does shine here. During dinner, it peeked out of the clouds!
