Day 7 found us arriving in Lerwick in the Shetland Islands. Named for the ponies? Probably the other way around.
The fishing industry is huge here. We docked right next to some huge commercial fishing vessels that reminded me of the TV show Deadliest Catch.
It was a fascinating little village/city smack in the middle of the North Sea. It was a beautiful village with a deep history of aiding the Norway in World War II with what they called the Shetland Bus. They had a small history museum that housed a number of first person narratives and artifacts.
We made a stop to greet some Shetland Ponies. They were really interesting to see up close. They were bred to work in the mines and can pull up to 2-1/2 times their weight. Their breeding is highly regulated and managed to keep the blood lines pure.
The countryside was really pretty with long expanses of gently rolling hills and green meadows dotted with sheep.
After touring it was back to the ship for a late lunch and a nap before hitting the gym.
We experienced a bit of rainy weather that allowed us to have the spa at the bow of the ship to ourselves. Maybe others had better sense and stayed inside!
I know you're waiting for it.... But, I forgot to take a food shot yesterday. I'll try to do better!
