Thursday morning dawned as if nothing had happened the day before. It was a welcome change.
We took it easy in the morning only hopping on a bus and seeing the sights of Baton Rouge. The stop at the Capitol Park museum was really interesting. They provided an immersive experience from the earliest days of Louisiana through the cultural and economic shifts the state has endured.
The afternoon was spent going to the Atchafalaya Swamp just a little east of Baton Rouge. It’s been decades since I was in a true cypress swamp and it was refreshing. We were on an air boat with about 10 other people. The guide wandered at a medium speed through the swamp on some trails and then ended up at a spot where they knew their “pet” alligators would be. The guide spent about 30 minutes describing life on the bayou and a lot of discussion about the fish, animals and trees. He really knew his stuff.
We got back to the ship just in time to receive our disembarkation instructions for Saturday. Time has gone by so quickly it’s hard to imagine that tomorrow is our last day on the ship.
The evening entertainment has been over the top as a new artist or group came on each evening. The talent was selected to allow us to experience the transition from the Blues in Memphis, through rock and roll to Civil War music on into Cajun Zydeco songs sung in Creole. Tonight was different as the ship brought on a trio reminescent of the Andrews Sisters. It was just plain fun watching them perform.
